It’s safe

So just off the top, we find ourselves on a broad “balcony”.  Visitors pass by above and usually have no clue there is someone set up painting down here.  I chose this scene looking northerly because it has several attractive elements.  The distant Coconino layer will soon catch a smack of lowering sunlight while the shadows develop on the east sides.  The diagonal line formed by the trees and vegetation is a powerful and compelling element in a painting.  This is a naturally occurring one and I’ll take advantage of it.  The lowering sun will soon tinge the tree top while the rest of the slope will fall into shadow.  Also, the tallest tree spans three planes and ties them together; sky, canyon, and foreground.  Without that element, there would only be three boring horizontal planes.  © Dawn Sutherland  2017
