Take a Hike

O’Leary Peak, a lava dome, reaching nearly 9,000’ is just northeast of Flagstaff.  A five-mile closed Forest Service road leads to the lookout tower at the top, well, near the top.  To reach the full summit, one has to take a short, but difficult side trail.  We’ll leave that for another day.  This turned out to be more strenuous than we expected with five miles of unrelenting  uphill trudging…and, of course, five miles back down.  The reward at the end was certainly worth it, however!  Pack more water than you think you’ll need, a hearty lunch and snacks, plus trekking poles.  Let’s go!
