I know that by 8 a.m., a good deal of the shadow will be gone.  I like this dominant shadow and minimal light. It gives me a chance to put some lovely reflected light in those shadows.  One hour later and much of it will be gone.  I spend quite some time sketching the formation in this manner.  I place my sketch on the side tray of my palette box and find I’ll rely more on the sketch for the design and only look out at the Canyon to check on the color.  I can reference both the sketch and reality throughout the two hours.  © Dawn Sutherland  2017
